Our Journey

Our journey of Radio Gujarat 88.4 began with this fundamental belief: that every individual, no matter their background or location, deserves a platform to be heard. With the support and vision of Drishti Foundation Trust, a non-profit organization recognized globally for its work in health, education, and environment, Radio Gujarat 88.4 was born as Gujarat’s own community radio – a station created by the people, for the people, and dedicated to the people.

The idea was simple yet powerful — to bridge the communication gap between communities and decision-makers, amplify local voices, and provide inclusive media that resonates with grassroots realities. In the early stages, our team visited remote villages, tribal belts, urban slums, and coastal communities, gathering insights, listening to stories, and identifying the challenges people face in accessing reliable, localized, and timely information. What we learned was eye-opening. Despite the digital revolution, thousands of citizens across Gujarat still rely on traditional media, and radio remains the most accessible and trusted source of information for them. But there was a vacuum — a lack of content that truly represented their needs, culture, language, and concerns.

It was this realization that propelled us to create Radio Gujarat 88.4, a community radio station rooted in the soul of Gujarat, representing its diversity, dialects, heritage, and developmental priorities. With licensing approvals, technical groundwork, and community engagement in place, the station was formally launched — not just as a media outlet, but as a mission to empower, educate, and engage. Our first broadcast was a blend of cultural pride and social messaging. From folk artists singing traditional Garba to farmers discussing sustainable practices, and from local leaders addressing health concerns to students sharing digital learning experiences — the mic was handed directly to the community.

Since then, our journey has grown deeper and wider. Today, Radio Gujarat 88.4 serves as a vibrant, multi-thematic communication platform that touches upon vital sectors such as climate action, education, rural livelihoods, health and hygiene, water conservation, youth empowerment, and gender justice. Each program is thoughtfully curated to suit local preferences and is broadcast in Gujarati and regional dialects to ensure inclusivity and relatability. Our community-centric model ensures that voices from the ground are not just featured but celebrated. Women farmers, frontline health workers, anganwadi teachers, differently-abled youth, and senior citizens — all find a space on Radio Gujarat 88.4 to share their insights and inspire others.

A cornerstone of our journey has been the promotion of climate literacy and environmental stewardship. Gujarat has faced its share of environmental challenges – from water scarcity to desertification – and Radio Gujarat 88.4 has taken a proactive role in spreading awareness around water conservation, solar energy adoption, afforestation drives, and sustainable farming techniques. Our listeners actively participate in these programs, and many have initiated community-based climate action inspired by what they hear on air.

We have also been instrumental in bridging the gap in healthcare communication, particularly in remote and underserved areas. By collaborating with doctors, public health experts, and ASHA workers, we deliver crucial information on maternal and child health, nutrition, mental well-being, infectious diseases, and public health schemes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when misinformation was rampant and physical mobility was limited, Radio Gujarat 88.4 became a lifeline for thousands of families, providing verified health updates, vaccination schedules, helpline numbers, and coping strategies.

Our radio station does not believe in one-way communication. We are proud to say that interactivity is the soul of our programming. Through phone-ins, WhatsApp voice notes, community field recordings, and studio visits, we ensure our listeners become contributors, not just consumers. We have trained dozens of local youth as community reporters and broadcasters, creating a ripple effect of media literacy and skill development. These young changemakers are now documenting local stories, highlighting unsung heroes, and holding live debates on issues such as sanitation, women’s safety, education dropout rates, and inclusive governance.

Over time, we have developed strong partnerships with NGOs, educational institutions, and government departments to enhance the quality and reach of our content. From hosting radio-school lessons for rural children to broadcasting Panchayat-level updates, from highlighting youth skill development schemes to promoting traditional medicine systems — our station acts as a bridge between policy and people. We have also begun producing podcast-style series on topics like biodiversity, waste management, and sustainable urban planning to reach a wider digital audience.

Looking ahead, the journey of Radio Gujarat 88.4 is poised for even greater impact. We are working on expanding our coverage through satellite and internet-based platforms, launching a mobile app, and setting up radio listening groups in schools, anganwadis, and community centers. Our future roadmap includes developing radio journalism training modules, promoting inclusive media for the visually impaired, and launching radio fellowships for grassroots changemakers.

At its core, Radio Gujarat 88.4 remains deeply rooted in its founding principle — that change begins with listening.
